Pogona barbata
- Bearded dragons are native to Australia. In the wild they can be found in a wide range of habitats, from deserts to dry forests to brushy scrublands. These lizards can often be spotted basking on fallen branches and fence posts, and even picnic tables.
- Bearded dragons get their name from their spiky appearance and their throat pouch, which expands and deepens in color when the lizard is excited.
- As omnivores, bearded dragons consume a variety of plants as well as animals like insects that provide protein.
- The typical lifespan of a bearded dragon is 10 to 15 years. We are not exactly sure how old Grandma is, but she was near that range when she came to Hickory Knolls. She had had at least two other owners, one of whom kept her with another bearded dragon that inflicted injury to her left eye. Some scar tissue remains, but Grandma doesn’t let it slow her down.
